Most Essex grammar schools use the CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) or FSCE (Foundation of Selective Schools in Colchester and Essex) format — not the generic GL Assessment used elsewhere in England. This means Essex preparation is highly specific. Children need to practise with the right paper styles, question types, and timing — not just generic 11+ books from a shop.

For the Essex CSSE exam (which sits in September of Year 6), starting 12–18 months before gives time for genuine foundation building — not just cramming. Starting in Year 5 is still absolutely viable, but earlier gives more breathing room for a child who needs to close specific gaps.
