About the Cumbria 11+

England's Northernmost Grammar

Cumbria has just one selective grammar school — Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) in Penrith, founded in 1564 by Royal Charter of Elizabeth I. It is the northernmost grammar school in England and the only selective state school in the former county of Cumbria (now Westmorland and Furness Council area).

Despite their names, Appleby Grammar School and Kirkby Stephen Grammar School are comprehensive (non-selective) schools that became non-selective in 1959. There are no grammar schools in Carlisle, Kendal, Barrow-in-Furness, or any other Cumbrian town.

The entrance test has recently switched from GL Assessment to the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) provider. The new test covers a broader range of subjects from the KS2 curriculum with three papers: Adventure, Beacon, and Compass. The FSCE deliberately avoids publishing past papers and changes its format annually to reduce the advantage of intensive tutoring.

Penrith
Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS)
Mixed FSCE

Founded in 1564 by Royal Charter, QEGS Penrith is a co-educational grammar school and part of the Changing Lives Learning Trust. It offers 160 Year 7 places through the FSCE entrance test with three papers: Adventure, Beacon, and Compass — covering a broad range of KS2 curriculum subjects including English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, and more. Oversubscription criteria prioritise looked-after children, siblings, then up to 10 Pupil Premium places. 32 places (20%) are awarded purely by ranked test score regardless of address. Remaining places go to catchment area residents by score, then all other qualifying applicants by distance. A defined catchment area centred on Penrith applies.

FAQs

Cumbria 11 Plus Questions

How many grammar schools are there in Cumbria?
There is only one selective grammar school in Cumbria — Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) in Penrith, offering 160 Year 7 places. It is the northernmost grammar school in England. Despite their names, Appleby Grammar School and Kirkby Stephen Grammar School are comprehensive (non-selective) schools that dropped selection in 1959. There are no grammar schools in Carlisle, Kendal, Barrow-in-Furness, or anywhere else in Cumbria.
What is the new FSCE test at QEGS Penrith?
QEGS has switched from GL Assessment to the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) test for 2027 entry onwards. The new test consists of three papers named Adventure, Beacon, and Compass, covering a broad range of KS2 curriculum subjects including English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, and more. It uses a mix of multiple-choice and written responses with pre-recorded voice instructions. Unlike the previous GL format, there is no Verbal Reasoning or Non-Verbal Reasoning component.
What score is needed to pass the QEGS Penrith 11+?
There is no fixed published pass mark. The qualifying standard is set each year based on the overall performance of the cohort. Meeting the qualifying score does not guarantee a place as oversubscription is common. After looked-after children, siblings, and Pupil Premium places, 32 places (20% of the intake) are awarded purely by ranked test score regardless of where the child lives. Remaining places go to catchment area residents by score.
Is there a catchment area for QEGS Penrith?
Yes. QEGS has a defined catchment area centred on Penrith and extending into surrounding areas. Children living within the catchment receive priority for remaining places after the top-priority categories (looked-after children, siblings, Pupil Premium, staff children, and the 32 score-based places) are filled. A catchment map is available from the school website. Children outside the catchment can still qualify but are ranked by distance from the school.
Why has QEGS changed from GL Assessment to FSCE?
The FSCE test is designed to assess a broader range of abilities and reduce the advantage gained from intensive tutoring. Unlike GL Assessment, FSCE deliberately does not publish past papers and changes its format annually. The test covers KS2 curriculum subjects beyond just English and Maths — including Science, Geography, History, Computing, and more. This approach aims to identify genuinely able students rather than those who have been heavily coached on a specific test format.
When does the QEGS Penrith entrance test take place?
Registration typically opens on 1 May and closes in mid-July. The entrance test is sat on a single day in mid-September of Year 6. Results are released in mid-October, before the Common Application Form deadline of 31 October. National Offer Day is in early March the following year. Registration is done directly through the school's website, but you must also submit a preference form through Westmorland and Furness Council.
