Be sure of your child’s abilities, make them understand

Before making your child begin Eleven Plus preparations, analyse your child’s academic potential and their aptitude. Keep track of your child’s performance in English and Mathematics. Be in regular touch with your child’s schoolteachers and ask them where your child scores well and where they have to improve. Based on these, you can make a decision on whether to put them through the process of Eleven Plus preparations and exams.

Also talk with your child and get to know what they think of being transferred from their primary school to a grammar school, where the curriculum and instruction would be on a higher level.

Children might not or will not have a clear idea about different kinds of schools. So start by talking to them about what they like about their current school. Then gradually talk to them about how the same things would be better in grammar schools, and make them understand. Initially, it might be difficult, as they might resist the idea of leaving a familiar place and friends for a new place. Be empathetic when you try to make them understand how your choice would be better for them.

Start with the basics, early on

If you decide that your kid is suited to take the Eleven Plus exam, then it’s always better to start as early as possible.

First focus on making your child strong in the basics of English and arithmetic.

As verbal skills are important for Eleven Plus exam, you can motivate them to read books other than schoolbooks. This would enrich their vocabulary and help them tackle verbal reasoning questions. It would also improve their reading speed and help them in acing comprehension questions. If you think your child’s reading skills are good enough, you can also teach them scanning and skimming techniques to enable them read quicker, which would save time during the test.

Eleven Plus’ English assessments also require students to be strong in spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Playing scrabble with them or making them fill crossword puzzles will help a lot. Making simple grammar and punctuation exercises look like games will also help greatly.

To improve your child’s arithmetic skills, make them solve number games and puzzles. Make sure they know their multiplication tables well, as multiplication and division form an important part of mathematics part of the test.
