About the Sutton 11+

Two-Stage Selection Process

Sutton has the highest concentration of grammar schools of any London borough, with 5 fully selective grammars plus 1 partially selective school. All participate in the Selective Eligibility Test (SET) — a bespoke consortium test (not GL Assessment or CEM) with a unique two-stage process.

Stage 1 (SET): Two multiple-choice papers in Maths and English only — no Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning. Children who pass Stage 1 are invited to Stage 2, where girls sit the NWSSEE (shared by Nonsuch and Wallington Girls) and boys sit the Shared Boys' Second Stage Test (shared by Sutton Grammar, Wallington County Grammar, and Wilson's). Final scores combine both stages, weighted 2:2:3:3 (Stage 1 Maths : Stage 1 English : Stage 2 Maths : Stage 2 English).

FAQs

Sutton 11 Plus Questions

What is the Selective Eligibility Test (SET)?
The SET is a bespoke two-stage entrance test used by all Sutton grammar schools — it is not provided by GL Assessment or CEM. Stage 1 consists of two multiple-choice papers in Maths and English (approximately 45 minutes each), based on the KS2 curriculum. No Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning is tested. Children who pass Stage 1 are invited to Stage 2, where they sit written Maths and English papers specific to their gender group. Final scores combine both stages in a 2:2:3:3 weighting ratio.
What is the difference between the girls' and boys' Stage 2 tests?
Girls sit the NWSSEE (Nonsuch & Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination), shared by Nonsuch High School and Wallington High School for Girls. Boys sit the Shared Boys' Second Stage Test, used by Sutton Grammar, Wallington County Grammar, and Wilson's School. Both Stage 2 tests cover Maths and English in written (not multiple-choice) format, but are separate papers with different content. Each gender group only sits one Stage 2 test that covers all relevant schools.
Is there a fixed pass mark for the Sutton SET?
No. The pass mark varies from year to year and from school to school. Each school sets its own threshold score based on the number of candidates and available places. Scores are age-standardised, and the final combined score from Stages 1 and 2 is rounded to the nearest four marks. With over 2,000 applications for some schools and fewer than 200 places, competition is extremely high.
Do the schools have catchment areas?
It varies by school. Nonsuch has a 5.25 km radius with 125 catchment places. Wallington Girls has a 6.7 km radius. Sutton Grammar uses priority postcodes (SM1–7, KT4, KT17, CR0 4, CR4). Wallington County Grammar has similar postcode-based catchment (SM1–7, KT4 8, CR0 4, CR4 4). Wilson's School has no formal catchment — places are allocated primarily by test score, with Sutton borough residents given tie-break priority.
Can my child apply from outside the London Borough of Sutton?
Yes. Children from any area can register for the SET. However, most schools give some priority to local residents through their oversubscription criteria. Wilson's is the most open — it has no postcode priority and admits solely on test performance (with Sutton residents preferred only as a tie-breaker). For other schools, living within the catchment area or priority postcodes significantly improves the chance of receiving an offer.
Does Greenshaw High School require the full two-stage process?
No. Greenshaw High School only uses SET Stage 1 for its 60 selective places — there is no Stage 2 requirement. This makes it an attractive option for families who want a selective pathway without the additional Stage 2 exam. The remaining 254 Year 7 places at Greenshaw are non-selective and allocated through standard comprehensive admissions criteria.
