About the Wirral 11+

Three Testing Routes

The Wirral has 6 grammar schools — 4 non-denominational schools sharing the Wirral Admissions Test (GL Assessment consortium) and 2 Catholic schools running their own entrance exams. Children can sit tests for multiple routes as dates allow.

The consortium test uses GL Assessment covering Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal/Spatial Reasoning, and Mathematics across two multiple-choice papers. The qualifying score is 236+ (combined standardised score). Catholic schools — St Anselm's College and Upton Hall School FCJ — set their own written papers independently.

FAQs

Wirral 11 Plus Questions

What does the Wirral Admissions Test cover?
The Wirral Admissions Test (used by Calday Grange, West Kirby Grammar, Wirral Grammar for Boys, and Wirral Grammar for Girls) consists of two multiple-choice papers set by GL Assessment, each lasting approximately 50 minutes. The papers cover Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning (including Spatial Reasoning), and Mathematics. Children mark answers on a separate answer sheet.
What score do children need to pass the Wirral 11+?
For the consortium test, children need a combined age-standardised score of 236 or above across both papers. However, achieving 236 does not guarantee a place — it simply makes the child eligible to list grammar schools as preferences. If a school is oversubscribed, places are allocated based on distance from the school. St Anselm's and Upton Hall have no fixed pass marks and rank candidates by score.
How do the Catholic school tests differ from the consortium test?
St Anselm's College sets its own written (not multiple choice) exam covering English, Maths, and Verbal Reasoning across three one-hour papers. Upton Hall School FCJ also sets its own written exam focused on Verbal Reasoning. Both Catholic schools give priority to baptised Catholic children in their oversubscription criteria. These tests are separate from the Wirral Admissions Test.
Can my child sit tests for both consortium and Catholic schools?
Yes. Children can sit the Wirral Admissions Test and the St Anselm's or Upton Hall tests, provided the dates do not clash. Registration is separate for each route — register with Wirral Council for the consortium test and directly with the Catholic schools for their own tests. You must also submit a Common Application Form to your home local authority by 31 October listing your preferences.
When is the Wirral 11+ test taken?
The Wirral Admissions Test is typically sat in mid-September of Year 6 on a single day. Results are issued by approximately mid-October, before the Common Application Form deadline of 31 October. The Catholic schools also test in September but on separate dates. National Offer Day is 1 March the following year.
Can children from outside the Wirral apply to Wirral grammar schools?
Yes. Out-of-area applicants can apply to Wirral grammar schools and sit the entrance tests. However, for the four consortium schools, if more children achieve the qualifying score of 236 than there are places, distance from the school is used as the oversubscription criterion. This may disadvantage children living further away. Catholic school admissions prioritise faith criteria alongside test scores.
