About the Barnet 11+

Three Schools, Three Tests

Barnet has 3 grammar schools — 1 boys' and 2 girls' — all located within the London Borough of Barnet. Unlike many grammar school areas, Barnet schools do not operate as a consortium. Each school runs its own independent admissions process with separate registration, test dates, and selection criteria.

All three schools use GL Assessment as the primary test provider, but each tests different subjects in different formats. Queen Elizabeth's tests English and Maths only, Henrietta Barnett uses a two-stage process with VR, NVR, English and Maths, and St Michael's tests VR, NVR, Maths, and English with a faith requirement. You must register separately with each school.

Barnet
Queen Elizabeth's School
Boys GL Assessment

Founded by Royal Charter in 1573, Queen Elizabeth's School is consistently one of the highest-performing state schools in England. Over 3,000 boys sit the entrance test annually for 180 places. The exam consists of two multiple-choice papers — English and Mathematics — with scores age-standardised. There is no catchment area; the 180 highest-scoring candidates are offered places regardless of address. Distance is only used as a tiebreaker at the cut-off point.

Girls GL Assessment + School-Set

One of the most competitive grammar schools in the country, Henrietta Barnett uses a unique two-stage selection process. Round 1 is a GL Assessment multiple-choice test covering English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The top 300 candidates are then invited to sit Round 2 — school-set written papers in English (comprehension and creative writing) and Mathematics (problem-solving). Over 2,000 girls apply each year. A 3-mile priority zone applies after Round 2, giving closer candidates priority over those further away.

Over 2,000 applicants sit the test each year for 128 places. Catholic applicants are strongly prioritised — up to 25% of places (32) are reserved for Pupil Premium candidates. FAQs

Barnet 11 Plus Questions

How many grammar schools are there in Barnet?
There are 3 grammar schools in the London Borough of Barnet: Queen Elizabeth's School (boys), The Henrietta Barnett School (girls), and St Michael's Catholic Grammar School (girls). Together they offer 428 Year 7 places. Each school runs its own independent admissions process — there is no Barnet consortium or shared test.
Do Barnet grammar schools use a common entrance test?
No. Unlike many grammar school areas, Barnet's three grammar schools do not share a common test. Each school sets its own exam with different subjects and formats. Queen Elizabeth's tests English and Maths only, Henrietta Barnett uses a two-stage process (VR, NVR, English in Round 1, then English and Maths in Round 2), and St Michael's tests VR, NVR, Maths, and English. You must register separately with each school you wish to apply to.
What is the two-stage process at Henrietta Barnett School?
Henrietta Barnett uses a unique two-round selection. Round 1 is a GL Assessment multiple-choice test covering English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The top 300 candidates from Round 1 are invited to sit Round 2 — school-set written papers in English (comprehension and creative writing) and Mathematics (problem-solving). Final places are offered based on combined scores from both rounds, with a 3-mile priority zone giving closer candidates an advantage.
What score is needed to get into Queen Elizabeth's School?
The qualifying standard at QE Boys is a combined score of 220 across both papers. However, the actual admission cutoff is higher due to extreme oversubscription — recent cutoffs have been around 232–235. Over 3,000 boys sit the test annually for 180 places. There is no catchment area; the 180 highest-scoring candidates are offered places regardless of where they live, with distance used only as a tiebreaker.
Can non-Catholic girls apply to St Michael's Catholic Grammar School?
In practice, St Michael's is heavily oversubscribed by Catholic applicants. Non-Catholic applicants are only considered if fewer than 200 Catholic girls register for the test, which rarely happens. Catholic applicants must provide a Certificate of Baptism, evidence of First Holy Communion, and a Certificate of Catholic Practice signed by their Parish Priest. Up to 25% of places are reserved for Pupil Premium candidates.
Is there a catchment area for Barnet grammar schools?
Queen Elizabeth's School and St Michael's Catholic Grammar have no catchment area — applications are accepted from anywhere (subject to faith criteria at St Michael's). Distance is only used as a tiebreaker at QE. Henrietta Barnett operates a 3-mile priority zone: after Round 2, children living within 3 miles of the school are given priority over those living further away. All three schools require a separate Common Application Form submitted to your home local authority by 31 October.
