About the Bexley 11+

One Test, Four Schools

Bexley has 4 grammar schools — 1 boys', 1 girls', and 2 co-educational — all using the unified Bexley Selection Test administered by the London Borough of Bexley. One registration and one test covers applications to all four schools.

The test is provided by Quest Assessments and consists of two multiple-choice papers covering Verbal Ability & English Comprehension, Numerical Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Scores are age-standardised with a weighting of 50% verbal, 25% numerical, 25% non-verbal. Approximately 30% of test-takers achieve the selective standard each year. The top 180 scorers receive guaranteed grammar school placement priority. There is no catchment restriction — any child can sit the test.

FAQs

Bexley 11 Plus Questions

What is the Bexley Selection Test?
The Bexley Selection Test is a unified entrance exam used by all four grammar schools in the London Borough of Bexley. It is provided by Quest Assessments and consists of two multiple-choice papers covering Verbal Ability and English Comprehension, Numerical Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Each paper takes approximately 50 minutes. Scores are age-standardised with a weighting of 50% verbal, 25% numerical, and 25% non-verbal. One registration covers all four schools.
What score do children need to pass the Bexley 11+?
There is no fixed pass mark. The selective standard is determined annually by the Council and the four grammar school head teachers based on the cohort's performance. Approximately 30% of test-takers achieve selective status each year. The average age-standardised score is 200, with most candidates scoring between 170 and 230. The top 180 scorers receive guaranteed grammar school placement priority at several of the schools.
Can my child apply to all four Bexley grammar schools?
Your child sits the Bexley Selection Test once and the result applies to all four schools. However, boys can only apply to Beths Grammar (boys), Bexley Grammar (mixed), and Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar (mixed) — giving access to approximately 594 places. Girls can apply to Townley Grammar (girls), Bexley Grammar (mixed), and Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar (mixed) — giving access to approximately 626 places. You must also submit a Common Application Form to your home local authority by 31 October.
Is there a catchment area for the Bexley Selection Test?
There is no geographic restriction on who can register to sit the Bexley Selection Test — any child can apply regardless of where they live. However, distance from home to school is a major oversubscription criterion at all four schools. Places are allocated by straight-line distance after other priority categories (looked-after children, top 180 scorers, Pupil Premium, siblings) are fulfilled. Living closer to your preferred school significantly improves your chances.
When does the Bexley Selection Test take place?
Registration typically opens on 1 March and closes at the end of March (online only, no late applications accepted). The test is sat in early September of Year 6 — school-based testing runs from 2–10 September and grammar school centre testing from 7–10 September. Results are issued in early October, before the Common Application Form deadline of 31 October. National Offers Day is 1 March the following year.
Are there Pupil Premium places at Bexley grammar schools?
Yes. All four schools reserve places for disadvantaged pupils who achieve the selective standard. Beths Grammar reserves up to 12 places, Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar up to 12 places (within 5 miles), and Townley Grammar up to 20 places (with additional places for girls scoring within 2% below the threshold). A supplementary form is required by 31 October to apply for Pupil Premium priority at most schools.
