About the Calderdale 11+

One Test, Two Schools

Calderdale has 2 grammar schools — both co-educational and both located in Halifax. They operate a joint admissions process with a single shared entrance test. One registration and one test covers applications to both schools, offering a combined 360 Year 7 places.

The test is provided by Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) and consists of three papers: Paper 1 (English & Maths, multiple-choice), Paper 2 (English & Maths, written responses), and Paper 3 (Creative Writing). All papers are sat on a single Saturday in September.

Scores are age-standardised and the top 510 candidates across both schools are deemed to have met the qualifying standard — competing for 360 places. Only candidates who achieve an eligible score on Papers 1 and 2 have their Creative Writing paper assessed. Content is based on the KS2 curriculum through end of Year 5 only.

Together they offer 360 Year 7 places. Both are co-educational and non-denominational. They share a joint entrance test — one registration and one test covers applications to both schools.
What subjects does the Calderdale 11+ test cover?
The test consists of three papers sat on a single Saturday in September: Paper 1 covers English and Maths in multiple-choice format (~45 minutes), Paper 2 covers English and Maths with written responses (~35 minutes), and Paper 3 is a Creative Writing task requiring original writing in response to a prompt. What score is needed to pass the Calderdale 11+?
There is no fixed pass mark. The top 510 candidates across both schools are deemed to have met the qualifying standard, competing for 360 total places. Raw scores are age-standardised (with 100 as the year group average) to ensure fairness for younger children. Is there a catchment area for Calderdale grammar schools?
It depends on the school. The North Halifax Grammar School has a defined Priority Admissions Area — up to 10% of places (18) may be reserved for children living within this zone. The Crossley Heath School has no geographic restriction at all — families from any UK local authority may apply. At Crossley Heath, after looked-after children and Pupil Premium places, all remaining places are allocated purely by test score.
What is the FSCE test provider?
Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) is the test provider used by Calderdale's grammar schools, replacing the previous GL Assessment test. FSCE describes its test as "modern and inclusive," designed to assess academic ability holistically rather than rewarding rote learning or intensive tutoring. The same provider is used by several other grammar schools across England, including Heckmondwike Grammar, Skipton Girls' High, and Ermysted's Grammar.
Can my child apply to both Calderdale grammar schools with one test?
Yes. Both schools share a single joint entrance test. You register once (via either school's website) and sit the test on one Saturday in September. The results are shared across both schools. You must also list your preferred school(s) on your local authority's Common Application Form (CAF) by 31 October. Both schools offer free 11+ preparation through Atom Learning for Pupil Premium-eligible students.
