CSSE 11 Plus Mock Tests — FAQs

What is the CSSE 11 Plus exam?
The CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) is the 11+ entrance exam used by selective grammar schools in Essex and Southend-on-Sea. It is a consortium of schools that share a single entrance test — one registration and one exam day covers all participating schools. The exam tests English (comprehension and continuous writing) and Mathematics only, with no Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning components.
Which schools use the CSSE exam?
The CSSE exam is used by King Edward VI Grammar School (KEGS) in Chelmsford, Chelmsford County High School for Girls, Colchester Royal Grammar School, Westcliff High School for Boys, Westcliff High School for Girls, Southend High School for Boys, Southend High School for Girls, and The Henrietta Barnett School in London. One exam result is accepted by all these schools.
What subjects are tested in the CSSE?
The CSSE tests two subjects: English and Mathematics. The English paper includes reading comprehension (with inference-based questions) and continuous writing (an extended essay or composition). The Mathematics paper covers arithmetic, problem-solving and multi-step questions based on the Year 5/6 curriculum and beyond. There is no Verbal Reasoning or Non-Verbal Reasoning — this is a key difference from GL-style 11+ exams.
When is the CSSE exam and when are results out?
The CSSE exam is sat in September of Year 6. Both papers (English and Mathematics) are completed on the same day. Results are released to parents in mid-October, at which point families know whether their child has met the qualifying standard. The Common Application Form (CAF) deadline follows on 31 October, with National Offer Day on 1 March.
How is this different from GL 11+ exams?
The CSSE exam and GL-style 11+ exams are fundamentally different. The CSSE tests only English and Mathematics using written, paper-based papers including comprehension, continuous writing and mathematical problem-solving. GL-style exams, used by grammar schools in other parts of the country, typically include Verbal Reasoning (VR) and Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) and are often multiple-choice. Preparation strategies must be tailored to the specific exam format your child will sit.
When should preparation start?
Most families begin building core English and Maths foundations in Year 4, with focused CSSE-specific preparation starting in Year 5. This includes regular reading, comprehension practice, extended writing exercises and mathematical problem-solving. In the months leading up to the September exam, timed CSSE-style mock tests become essential for building exam technique, time management and confidence under realistic conditions.
