Our Methodology

Why This Approach Works

Built on cognitive science and years of teaching 11+ candidates. Children learn best when they feel challenged but supported.

Progressive Difficulty
Each session builds gently on the last. Children are never asked to attempt material they have not been prepared for, yet they are constantly nudged forward.
Spaced Revisiting
Key concepts return at increasing levels of complexity, embedding them into long-term memory rather than short-term recall.
Game-Based Engagement
Kahoot-style live quizzes turn practice into play. Children compete with themselves and peers in a friendly environment that builds speed and accuracy.
Board-Aligned Style
From session 5, questions mirror the exact phrasing and pattern of major 11+ boards — so by the time mock exams arrive, the format feels familiar.
60 Minutes

What a Typical Session Looks Like

Every session follows the same comforting rhythm. Knowing the structure helps both you and your child prepare with confidence.

1
Warm-Up
5 minutes
A friendly arrival round of 3-4 quick questions to settle the mind and recall the previous week's themes.
2
Core Round
35 minutes
20 Kahoot-style questions spanning all four subjects. Children answer live while the tutor explains every solution.
3
Strategy Spotlight
10 minutes
The tutor isolates the trickiest question and walks the class through the solving technique. This is where exam-craft is built.
4
Take-Home Challenge
10 minutes
2-3 carry-forward questions themed for the upcoming session, so the next class begins with momentum.

Detailed Breakdown

Stage-by-Stage Walkthrough

For every stage: what your child should be able to do by the end, plus a session-by-session breakdown of focus areas.

1
Stage 1Foundation — Settling in & finding their feetIntroductory

These first four sessions are about building comfort and confidence. Children meet the four 11+ subject areas in their gentlest form and discover that this kind of work can be enjoyable.

By the end of this stage, your child should be able to:
  • Recognise core 11+ vocabulary and synonyms
  • Confidently perform 2- and 3-digit arithmetic
  • Identify 2D and 3D shapes and their properties
  • Spot simple alphabetical and number patterns
  • Decode their first letter-number codes
SessionThemeFocus Areas
1Welcome to Words & NumbersCore vocabulary, 2-digit arithmetic, simple patterns, shape matching
2Building BlocksAntonyms, place value, compound words, 2D shape properties
3Words in ContextSynonyms in context, 3-digit arithmetic, hidden words, shape sequences
4Grammar & CalculationParts of speech, multiplication, letter codes, 3D shape nets
2
Stage 2Building — Stepping into reasoningEasy

Now the work begins to stretch. Children start to make their first inferences from texts, solve word problems with multiple steps, and meet the analogies and 3D viewpoints that are staples of GL and CEM papers.

By the end of this stage, your child should be able to:
  • Make basic inferences from short passages
  • Solve multiplication and division word problems
  • Identify lowest common multiples and equivalent fractions
  • Build and extend simple number series
  • Track 3D shapes from different angles
SessionThemeFocus Areas
5Inference & Problem SolvingReading inference, word problems, number series, spatial patterns
6Vocabulary PowerSynonyms & antonyms, LCM, word relationships, mirror symmetry
7Reading & ReasoningComprehension skills, word problems, VR sequences, 3D shape views
3
Stage 3Developing — Sharpening the toolkitEasy-Medium

Sessions 8-10 introduce more sophisticated material: spelling rules, fractions, decimals, an introduction to algebra, and the literary devices children will need for both fiction and non-fiction comprehension. Session 10 is the programme's mid-point review.

By the end of this stage, your child should be able to:
  • Apply key spelling rules confidently
  • Add and compare fractions and decimals
  • Make character inferences from longer passages
  • Solve introductory algebraic equations
  • Apply percentages to real-world problems
SessionThemeFocus Areas
8Spelling & StructureSpelling rules, fractions/decimals, number patterns, complex NVR
9Reading DeeperInference & character, word problems, complex series, paper folding
10Mid-Point ReviewMixed review: comprehension, percentages, multi-step VR, combined NVR
4
Stage 4Advancing — Writing with style, reasoning with depthMedium

Now the programme begins to take on the shape of the 11+ itself. Children write in a more formal register, work with ratio and substitution, identify literary devices, and tackle their first CEM-style cloze passages.

By the end of this stage, your child should be able to:
  • Write in a formal register with appropriate punctuation
  • Work confidently with ratio and proportion
  • Identify simile, metaphor and personification
  • Decode VR letter and word codes
  • Tackle CEM-style cloze and synonym questions
SessionThemeFocus Areas
11Formal Language IntroFormal writing basics, ratio, complex VR, 3D visualisation
12Literary Devices & AlgebraSimile/metaphor/personification, intro to algebra, VR word codes, NVR transformations
13CEM-Style VocabularyCEM cloze and synonym style, percentages, multi-step VR, complex matrices
5
Stage 5Board-Style — Speaking the language of the boardsMedium-Hard

From here onwards, every question is shaped by the actual examinations your child will sit. GL comprehension, CSSE depth, coordinate geometry, and board-specific phrasing prepare children to recognise question types instantly.

By the end of this stage, your child should be able to:
  • Use GL-style comprehension techniques fluently
  • Solve angle and coordinate geometry problems
  • Analyse advanced vocabulary in context
  • Recognise Fibonacci and number-theory patterns

For Parents

How You Can Support Your Child

Parents are the single most important factor in a child's 11+ journey. You do not need to be a tutor — you simply need to be a steady, encouraging presence.

Celebrate Effort Over Outcome
Praise the trying. Marks will rise on their own when effort is consistent. Focus on the journey, not just results.
Establish a Quiet Study Slot
Twenty minutes a day in the same chair beats two hours on a Sunday. Routine is the secret to consistent progress.
Read Together, Talk Together
A 10-minute discussion about a newspaper article, story or even a film does more for vocabulary than any flashcard.
Trust the Progression
If a topic feels hard now, it is meant to. The next session has been designed to bridge it. Avoid jumping ahead in the programme.
Use the Progress Tracker
Look at scores after every session — but discuss them weekly, not daily. Patterns matter more than single results.
Stay in Touch With Us
If your child is struggling or excelling, tell us. We will adjust pacing and challenge accordingly to keep them on track.
The 11+ is a marathon, not a sprint

By the end of this Year 4 programme, your child will not only have answered 500 carefully designed questions — they will have developed the patience, the technique and the quiet confidence that exam day rewards.
