About the Slough 11+

One Consortium, One Test

Slough has 4 grammar schools — all co-educational — operating as the Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools. A single registration and one test sitting covers applications to all four schools. The consortium switched from CEM to GL Assessment from the 2023/24 admissions cycle onwards.

The 11+ consists of 2 multiple-choice papers, each approximately 60 minutes. Paper 1 covers English comprehension, technical English, and Verbal Reasoning. Paper 2 covers Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics. The qualifying standardised score is 111 (top 35% of the cohort). Reaching 111 makes a child eligible but does not guarantee a place — all four schools are heavily oversubscribed.

Central Slough
Herschel Grammar School
Mixed GL Assessment

A co-educational academy converter and part of The Schelwood Trust, located in central Slough. Herschel uses a 4-mile catchment radius from the school site — covering Slough, Windsor, Taplow, Farnham Common, and Langley. Within the catchment, places are allocated by proximity to the school. Up to 10 additional places are reserved for Pupil Premium-eligible children within 10 miles. Children of permanent staff employed for 2+ years also receive priority. Any remaining places are filled by rank order of 11+ performance.

Mixed GL Assessment

A co-educational academy converter and the largest grammar school in Slough with 180 Year 7 places. Langley Grammar uses a three-tier priority area system for place allocation. Priority Area 1 (SL3 7/8/9/0 postcodes) receives up to 100 places. Priority Area 2 covers wider Slough and nearby boroughs including parts of Uxbridge, Hounslow, and Windsor. Priority Area 3 extends further to areas including Bracknell, Maidenhead, and parts of Harrow and Ealing. Applicants must have been resident at their address for at least 6 months before the CAF deadline.

St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School
Mixed Catholic GL Assessment

The only co-educational Catholic grammar school in England, founded in 1897 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Order of St Benedict. A voluntary-aided school that welcomes pupils of all faiths and none, but gives highest priority to practising baptised Catholic children with a priest's reference. A Supplementary Information Form (SIF) is required in addition to the Common Application Form. After Catholic applicants, priority extends to other Christian denominations, then children of other faiths. Pupils from Slough Catholic primary schools also receive consideration.

Formed in 1982 by the merger of Slough Grammar School (boys) and Slough High School (girls), Upton Court Grammar is now an academy converter within the Pioneer Educational Trust. It has several distinctive admissions features: up to 20 places are reserved for Pupil Premium-eligible children, and feeder school priority is given to pupils from Foxborough Primary School and Trevelyan Middle School. FAQs

Slough 11 Plus Questions

What test do the Slough grammar schools use?
All four Slough grammar schools use GL Assessment as part of the Slough Consortium. The test consists of 2 multiple-choice papers, each approximately 60 minutes long. Paper 1 covers English comprehension, technical English (grammar, punctuation, spelling), and Verbal Reasoning. Paper 2 covers Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics. The consortium switched from CEM to GL Assessment from the 2023/24 admissions cycle.
What is the qualifying score for Slough grammar schools?
The qualifying standardised score for the Slough Consortium is 111, which places a child in approximately the top 35% of the test cohort. However, achieving 111 makes a child eligible for consideration — it does not guarantee a place. All four grammar schools are heavily oversubscribed among eligible candidates. Each school then applies its own oversubscription criteria (distance, priority areas, faith, Pupil Premium) to allocate the available places.
Can my child apply to all four Slough grammar schools with one test?
Yes. The four schools operate as the Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools, sharing a single GL Assessment entrance test. One registration and one test sitting covers all four schools. You then name your preferred schools (in order of preference) on the Common Application Form submitted to your home local authority by 31 October. You can list all four Slough grammars plus non-selective schools on your form.
Is St Bernard's only for Catholic children?
No. St Bernard's Catholic Grammar School welcomes pupils of all faiths and none. However, it is a voluntary-aided Catholic school and gives highest priority (after Looked After Children) to practising baptised Catholic children who provide a priest's reference. Other Christian denominations and children of other faiths are also considered in subsequent priority categories. A Supplementary Information Form is required alongside the Common Application Form.
Do all four schools have the same admissions criteria?
No. While all four share the same qualifying test, each school sets its own oversubscription criteria. Herschel uses a 4-mile catchment radius. Langley Grammar has a three-tier priority area system based on postcodes. St Bernard's prioritises by faith (Catholic, then other Christians, then other faiths). Upton Court reserves places for Pupil Premium children and gives feeder school priority to Foxborough Primary and Trevelyan Middle School pupils.
Are the Slough grammar schools single-sex or co-educational?
All four Slough grammar schools are co-educational (mixed), admitting both boys and girls. This is unusual among grammar school areas — many other regions have separate boys' and girls' grammar schools. Slough is one of the few areas where every grammar school is mixed. The co-educational nature means families only need to consider location, admissions criteria, and school ethos when choosing between the four schools.
