About the Enfield 11+

One School, Unique Process

Enfield has just one selective grammar school — The Latymer School in Edmonton. Despite its name, "Enfield Grammar School" is a non-selective comprehensive that dropped selection in 1967. The Latymer School is co-educational, admitting both boys and girls, and offers 192 Year 7 places each year.

The 11+ uses a combination of GL Assessment (Maths and Verbal Reasoning, multiple-choice) and a school-set English paper (comprehension and creative writing, written). The school operates an Inner Area postcode requirement — only children living within specific N, E, and EN postcodes are eligible to apply. Up to 20 places are reserved for children with exceptional musical talent, and a further 20 places for children eligible for Free School Meals.

FAQs

Enfield 11 Plus Questions

How many grammar schools are there in Enfield?
There is only one selective grammar school in the London Borough of Enfield — The Latymer School in Edmonton, offering 192 Year 7 places. Despite its name, "Enfield Grammar School" is a non-selective comprehensive that dropped academic selection in 1967. The Latymer School is co-educational, admitting both boys and girls.
What subjects does The Latymer School 11+ test cover?
The test consists of three papers sat on a single day: Mathematics (30 minutes, GL Assessment, multiple-choice), Verbal Reasoning (30 minutes, GL Assessment, multiple-choice), and English (60 minutes, school-set, comprehension and creative writing — not multiple-choice). Total testing time is approximately 2 hours. Scores for Maths and VR are age-standardised.
What is the Inner Area postcode requirement?
Only children living within specific postcode areas are eligible to apply. These include most N postcodes (N1–N22, excluding N1C), selected E postcodes (E2, E4, E5, E8, E9, E17), and selected EN postcodes (EN1–EN4, EN5 sectors 1/2/4/5, EN8 sectors 7/8/9). Residency in the Inner Area must be established by 7 January of the admissions year. Children living outside these areas cannot apply.
What are the music aptitude places at The Latymer School?
Up to 20 of the 192 places are reserved for children demonstrating exceptional musical talent. These candidates must still sit and score within the top 700 on the academic test (Maths and Verbal Reasoning). Musical ability is assessed separately. This makes The Latymer School one of very few grammar schools to offer dedicated music aptitude places alongside academic selection.
Are there places for disadvantaged children?
Yes. Up to 20 places are reserved for children eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) or Universal Credit. These candidates must score within the top 900 on the Maths and Verbal Reasoning papers (a slightly lower threshold than the general top 700 requirement). This is part of The Latymer School's commitment to widening access to grammar school education.
What score is needed to get into The Latymer School?
There is no fixed pass mark. Admission is rank-based — the top 700 candidates on Maths and Verbal Reasoning are deemed "selective" and their English papers are then marked. Final places are allocated from within this group based on oversubscription criteria including looked-after children, FSM places, music places, and Inner Area ranking. Over 3,000 children apply each year for 192 places.
