About the Barnet 11+
Three Schools, Three Tests
Barnet has 3 grammar schools — 1 boys' and 2 girls' — all located within the London Borough of Barnet. Unlike many grammar school areas, Barnet schools do not operate as a consortium. Each school runs its own independent admissions process with separate registration, test dates, and selection criteria.
All three schools use GL Assessment as the primary test provider, but each tests different subjects in different formats. Queen Elizabeth's tests English and Maths only, Henrietta Barnett uses a two-stage process with VR, NVR, English and Maths, and St Michael's tests VR, NVR, Maths, and English with a faith requirement. You must register separately with each school.

Founded by Royal Charter in 1573, Queen Elizabeth's School is consistently one of the highest-performing state schools in England. Over 3,000 boys sit the entrance test annually for 180 places. The exam consists of two multiple-choice papers — English and Mathematics — with scores age-standardised. There is no catchment area; the 180 highest-scoring candidates are offered places regardless of address. Distance is only used as a tiebreaker at the cut-off point.

One of the most competitive grammar schools in the country, Henrietta Barnett uses a unique two-stage selection process. Round 1 is a GL Assessment multiple-choice test covering English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The top 300 candidates are then invited to sit Round 2 — school-set written papers in English (comprehension and creative writing) and Mathematics (problem-solving). Over 2,000 girls apply each year. A 3-mile priority zone applies after Round 2, giving closer candidates priority over those further away.

North Finchley
1 SchoolSt Michael's Catholic Grammar School
A Roman Catholic girls' grammar school requiring a Certificate of Catholic Practice and evidence of Baptism. The entrance exam consists of four papers: Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Mathematics (all multiple-choice), and English (written). Over 2,000 applicants sit the test each year for 128 places. Catholic applicants are strongly prioritised — up to 25% of places (32) are reserved for Pupil Premium candidates. Non-Catholic applicants are only considered if fewer than 200 Catholic girls register. No catchment area, but Catholic faith criteria must be met.
