One School, Three Papers
Kirklees has just one selective grammar school — Heckmondwike Grammar School. Despite its name, Batley Grammar School is a non-selective academy that uses fair banding, not the 11 Plus. Heckmondwike Grammar is co-educational and offers 210 Year 7 places each year, with over 1,000 children registering for the test.
The entrance exam is provided by Future Stories Community Enterprise (FSCE) and consists of three papers: English (multiple-choice and written), Mathematics (multiple-choice and written), and Creative Writing (original writing to a prompt). Papers 1 and 2 are computer-marked and age-standardised. Creative Writing is only assessed for candidates who reach the qualifying threshold on English and Maths.
The school has a defined catchment area covering Heckmondwike and Liversedge postcodes, but over 75% of places historically go to children living outside this zone. Up to 5% of places are reserved for students with proven musical achievement (Grade 2+).
