About the Medway Test

One Test, Six Schools

Medway is a unitary authority separate from Kent, with its own 11+ selection system called the Medway Test. All 6 grammar schools use this single coordinated test administered by Medway Council. The Medway Test is not transferable to Kent — children wanting to apply to both Medway and Kent grammar schools must sit both tests separately.

The Medway Test uses GL Assessment with 3 multiple-choice papers: English, Maths, and Reasoning (VR + NVR), plus a creative writing task. Scores are age-standardised and weighted: (English x 2) + (Maths x 2) + (Reasoning x 1), giving a maximum of 700. The qualifying score is set at approximately the top 25% of the cohort (recently around 482–492).

FAQs

Medway 11 Plus Questions

How does the Medway Test differ from the Kent Test?
The Medway Test and Kent Test are completely separate exams run by different authorities. The Medway Test has 3 compulsory papers (English, Maths, Reasoning) while the Kent Test has 2 compulsory papers with an optional writing paper for borderline cases. The scoring and weighting systems differ — Medway uses (English x2) + (Maths x2) + (Reasoning x1). Results are not transferable between the two authorities. Children wanting to apply to both Medway and Kent grammar schools must register for and sit both tests separately.
What score does my child need to pass the Medway Test?
The qualifying score is set each year at approximately the top 25% of the cohort (recently adjusted to the 26th percentile for 2026 entry). Recent qualifying scores have ranged from 482 to 492 out of a maximum weighted score of 700. Achieving the qualifying score makes your child "deemed selective" and eligible for grammar school consideration — but it does not guarantee a place. Each school then applies its own oversubscription criteria.
Are the Medway grammar schools going co-educational?
Three of the six Medway grammar schools — Chatham Grammar, Fort Pitt Grammar, and Holcombe Grammar — are becoming co-educational from September 2026 following DfE approval. Existing single-sex year groups will remain single-sex until those students leave. The Rochester Grammar School remains girls-only and Sir Joseph Williamson's Mathematical School remains boys-only (with co-educational sixth form). Rainham Mark Grammar School has always been co-educational.
Can children from outside Medway sit the Medway Test?
Yes. Any child can register for the Medway Test regardless of where they live. Children at Medway primary schools sit the test at their own school during the week, while children at non-Medway schools sit at a designated testing centre on a weekend. Both groups take the same test. However, oversubscription criteria at individual schools — particularly distance — naturally favour local residents when it comes to place allocation.
How is the Medway Test scored and weighted?
Raw scores from each of the three papers (English, Maths, Reasoning) are age-standardised by GL Assessment, with a maximum standardised score of 140 per section. These are then weighted using the formula: (English x 2) + (Maths x 2) + (Reasoning x 1), giving a maximum possible weighted score of 700. This means English and Maths carry double the weight of Reasoning in the overall result.
Do I need to submit a Supplementary Information Form?
Some Medway grammar schools — notably Rainham Mark Grammar School and The Rochester Grammar School — require a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) in addition to the Common Application Form submitted to your home local authority. Check each school's website for their specific requirements. The SIF is typically used to gather additional information for applying oversubscription criteria such as sibling connections or medical needs.
