About the NI Transfer Test

One Unified SEAG Test

Northern Ireland has approximately 66 grammar schools across all six counties plus Belfast. Unlike England, NI uses Year 8 entry (equivalent to Year 7 in England). Since 2023, all grammar schools use the single unified SEAG (Schools' Entrance Assessment Group) test, replacing the former separate AQE and GL Assessment tests.

The SEAG test consists of 2 papers sat over 2 consecutive Saturdays in November, each 60 minutes long with 56 questions (28 English + 28 Maths). Questions are a mix of multiple-choice and free-response/written. Scores are age-standardised into a Total Standardised Age Score (TSAS) ranging from 138 to 282, with a mean of 200.

NI grammar schools are broadly divided between Catholic maintained (managed under Catholic trusteeship) and controlled/voluntary (broadly non-denominational) schools, plus a small number of integrated schools with grammar streams. The transfer test is unregulated — it is organised by the grammar schools themselves, not the NI government.

FAQs

NI Transfer Test Questions

How many grammar schools are there in Northern Ireland?
There are approximately 66 grammar schools across Northern Ireland, spread across all six counties and Belfast. These include around 29 Catholic maintained grammar schools, 21 other voluntary grammars, and 16 controlled grammar schools. A small number of integrated schools also have grammar streams. All use the unified SEAG Transfer Test for Year 8 entry (equivalent to Year 7 in England).
What is the SEAG Transfer Test?
SEAG (Schools' Entrance Assessment Group) is the unified transfer test used by all NI grammar schools since 2023, replacing the former separate AQE and GL Assessment tests. It consists of 2 papers sat over 2 consecutive Saturdays in November. Each paper is 60 minutes with 56 questions (28 English + 28 Maths), using a mix of multiple-choice and free-response questions. Scores are age-standardised into a Total Standardised Age Score (TSAS) ranging from 138 to 282, with a mean of 200.
What score is needed to get into a grammar school in Northern Ireland?
There is no single pass mark — each school sets its own threshold based on demand. The most competitive schools require TSAS scores of 210+ (e.g., Friends' School Lisburn ~214–216, Methodist College ~212, Sullivan Upper ~212, Lumen Christi ~211). Many good grammar schools accept students with TSAS scores around 195–205. Some schools in less competitive areas accept scores below the mean of 200.
What happened to the AQE and GL tests?
From 2008 to 2022, NI had two separate transfer tests: AQE (3 papers, used mainly by controlled/Protestant grammars) and GL Assessment/PPTC (2 papers, used mainly by Catholic grammars). From November 2023, both were replaced by the single unified SEAG test. All grammar schools now accept SEAG results. However, schools' historical affiliations still influence their admissions criteria wording.
Is the NI transfer test run by the government?
No. The transfer test in Northern Ireland is unregulated — it is organised by the grammar schools themselves through SEAG, not by the NI Department of Education. The government does not support academic selection, but grammar schools continue to use it independently. Registration costs approximately £50, with FSME (Free School Meals Entitlement) pupils exempt from the fee.
When does registration open for the SEAG Transfer Test?
Registration typically opens in mid-May and closes in mid-September. Parents must register via the SEAG website portal (seagni.co.uk), upload required documentation (birth certificate, photo, ID), and pay the administration fee. Both papers must be sat to complete the assessment. Results are issued in late January, with school allocations confirmed by the Education Authority in May.
