About the Trafford 11+

Consortium Plus Catholic Schools

Trafford is one of the few areas in Greater Manchester retaining a fully selective grammar school system with 7 schools. The Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium covers 5 non-denominational schools sharing a single GL Assessment test, while 2 Catholic schools — Loreto Grammar and Saint Ambrose College — set their own entrance exams.

The consortium test uses GL Assessment with two multiple-choice papers covering Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. The qualifying standardised score is typically around 321–334. Children sit the test once and results apply to all five consortium schools. Catholic schools test separately with faith-based admissions criteria.

FAQs

Trafford 11 Plus Questions

What does the Trafford Consortium 11+ test cover?
The Trafford Grammar Schools Consortium test consists of two multiple-choice papers set by GL Assessment, taken on the same day with a short break between them. The papers cover Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning (including spatial reasoning). Answers are recorded on an Optical Mark Reading (OMR) answer sheet scanned by computer. One test covers applications to all five consortium schools.
What score do children need to pass the Trafford 11+?
Raw scores are combined and converted into an age-standardised score. The qualifying standard is typically around 321–334 (standardised), though the exact threshold varies each year based on the cohort. Many sources cite 334 as the benchmark for schools like Sale Grammar and Stretford Grammar. Scoring 75–80%+ consistently in practice papers is generally considered on track. Achieving the qualifying score does not guarantee a place — oversubscription criteria may apply.
How do the Catholic school tests differ from the consortium test?
Loreto Grammar School and Saint Ambrose College are NOT part of the Trafford Consortium and set their own entrance exams. Saint Ambrose tests VR (GL Assessment), plus school-set English and Maths papers. Loreto uses GL Assessment for English and VR, plus a school-set Maths paper. Both Catholic schools prioritise baptised Catholic children. Candidates must register and sit these exams separately from the consortium test.
Can my child sit tests for both consortium and Catholic schools?
Yes, provided the test dates do not clash. The consortium test is typically held in mid-September, and the Catholic schools hold their own exams on separate dates in September–October. Children can apply to any combination of consortium and Catholic schools. You must also submit a secondary school application via Trafford Council by 31 October naming your preferred schools.
Do Trafford grammar schools have catchment areas?
Yes. Each consortium school has priority catchment postcodes. For example, Sale Grammar prioritises M33, WA14, WA15, and Trafford residents in M23. Stretford Grammar prioritises M32, M33, M41, M15, M16, and M21. AGGS uses an 8-mile radius from the school. If more children achieve the qualifying score than there are places, those living within the priority area receive preference, followed by distance from the school.
When is the Trafford 11+ test taken?
The Trafford Consortium test is typically sat on a Monday in mid-September at the start of Year 6. Results are released in mid-October, before the secondary school application deadline of 31 October. The Catholic schools hold their own exams on separate dates in September–October. National Offer Day is 1 March the following year. Registration for the consortium test usually opens in May–June.
